Dietary protein content affects evolution for body size, body fat and viability in Drosophila melanogaster.

چکیده
The ability to use different food sources is likely to be under strong selection if organisms are faced with natural variation in macro-nutrient (protein, carbohydrate and lipid) availabilities. Here, we use experimental evolution to study how variable dietary protein content affects adult body composition and developmental success in Drosophila melanogaster. We reared flies on either a standard diet or a protein-enriched diet for 17 generations before testing them on both diet types. Flies from lines selected on protein-rich diet produced phenotypes with higher total body mass and relative lipid content when compared with those selected on a standard diet, irrespective of which of the two diets they were tested on. However, selection on protein-rich diet incurred a cost as flies reared on this diet had markedly lower developmental success in terms of egg-to-adult viability on both medium types, suggesting a possible trade-off between the traits investigated.

Fat requirement of Bester in winter feeding; effect of fat levels on growth indices and body chemical composition
This study aimed to determine the fat requirement and effect of dietary fat levels on growth and body composition indices of Bester (Huso huso ♀ × Acipenser ruthenus ♂) juveniles( 200.3 ± 2 g) in winter feeding. Fish were fed by 5 isonitrogenous diets (40% crude protein) with different fat levels including 10, 13, 16, 19 and 22%, 3 times daily according to the satiation for 50 days. The results...

متن کاملFat requirement of hybrid Asp (Leuciscus aspius ♀) × Caspian Kutum (Rutilus frisii ♂); effect on growth and biochemical indices
This study aimed to determine the fat requirement and effect of dietary fat levels on growth and body composition indices of hybrid Asp (Leuciscus aspius ♀) × Caspian Kutum (Rutilus frisii ♂). For this purpose, 252 fish with an average weight of 29.3 ± 5.8 g were introduced in a completely randomized design with six treatments each with triplicate groups. After two weeks of adaptation, fish wer...
متن کاملLife-history correlates of evolution under high and low adult mortality.
Life-history theory predicts evolutionary changes in reproductive traits and intrinsic mortality rates in response to differences in extrinsic mortality rates. Trade-offs between life- history traits play a pivotal role in these predictions, and such trade-offs are mediated, at least in part, by physiological allocations. To gain insight into these trade-offs, we have been performing a long-ter...
